Student competition

We are looking for designs from GSA students for our festive tree decorations. A great opportunity to produce commercially viable designs, develop professional skills and investigate the laser cutting process.

The winning set of 3 designs will receive a prize of £100 and the prestige of representing the School and our talented, creative student body. GSA Enterprises will oversee costs and production of the chosen designs, with proceeds from every decoration sold donated to supporting the School and restoration of the Mackintosh building.The designs will also adorn GSA’s official tree, welcoming visitors to the School and enticing customers over the busy festive period.

Designs entered must be your own original artwork, of which you hold and will maintain the copyright to, but will be offered to GSA Enterprises on an exclusive basis for 6 months should they be selected as the winning entry. The intellectual property of designs submitted but not selected will remain entirely with the students who created them.

Designs should be commercially viable and may be adapted by GSA Enterprises for increased suitability in discussion with the entrant. The winning design may also be used across additional GSAE marketing and advertising materials.

Merry and brightHanging decorations should: 

  • Be between 10 – 15 cm square in size.
  • Be designed for laser cutting from sheet material and require minimal finishing out with this.
  • Incorporate a hole to add string or wire for hanging.



  • Designs, shapes and colours that fit with the brand identity and current product range of GSA Shop.
  • Motifs that can be repeated, mixed and matched and sold as a set, with at least 3 different visual elements that work together.
  • Commercially viability – the decorations should be items that visitors to the School and online customers would like to buy for their own trees or give as gifts.
  • Types of sheet material used for creating decorations using laser cutting process – wood, card, felt or acrylic and the different colours and finishes of these materials.


Entries should be submitted showing a set of 3 designs and indicate materials and colours where relevant, with ready to cut files wherever possible.

Entries should be accompanied with a signed and dated entry form.

Submissions are welcome from students across all GSA departments.
Deadline for entries: Tuesday 11th October 2016, 5pm.
